Why is there a need?

  • In 2002, HIV was the third leading cause of death for African Americans between the ages of 25 and 44.
  • African Americans comprise approximately 13 percent of the U.S. population, but almost half of the AIDS cases.
  • In 2002, African Americans accounted for 55 percent of deaths due to HIV.
  • HIV is 100% preventable!
National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a national mobilization effort designed to increase the awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment among Black Americans and mobilize Black communities.

The movement has four main objectives that it hopes to impress upon the African American community:

  • Get tested for HIV and know your status
  • Get educated about HIV/AIDS in the local community
  • Get involved with the community
  • Get treated if you have tested positive for HIV or been diagnosed with AIDS
