GROVE HISTORY
1914 - Present
OUR HISTORY
“The Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church is structured around a five pillar ministry of Missions, Fellowship, Evangelism, Teaching and Worship. Rich in our History & Heritage, we embrace our mission ‘to be distinguished by our words and our deeds as the Church With Helping Hands’. Our vision ‘In this Church you can be Redeemed, Reconciled, Restored, and Revived” is shown through our Ambassador staff, various ministries, and community sharing & caring programs.’
From 1914 The Piney Grove Baptist Church was organized The first pastor was Rev. Jenkins. The church began in a three room house located on Bell Street in the northeastern section of Atlanta. Rev. Jenkins served the church for 3 years. the second Pastor was Rev James D. Sims. He led the church to a new location at 101 Boulevard in 1939. He served as Pastor for 21 years before his death. Rev. A.R. Barnette was called to pastor the church in November 1941. He served for 14 years and resigned to return to his natve Tennessee in November 1955.
In March 1956, Rev. Fank Jones become the fourth pastor of the church. The name of the church was changed to
"The Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church,"
and weekly Sunday services were instituted. Under Rev Jones' leadership, the church was relocated to 1879 Glenwood Avemue, SE and occupied a larger edifice. Rev. Jones brought many improvements to the church, and served it faithfully for 33 years until his death in September 1989.
In 1990, Rev. William E. Flippin, Sr. became the fifth Pastor of the chruch. The membership has grown in excess of 7000 and is still growing. There are three Sunday morning worship services. 7:30 Traditional ( Lifting what we know, love, value, and appreciate about being “black” Baptist.) 9:30 Contemporary (An effort to reach the 18-45 age group) Sermon and song to encourage and allow expressive worship in a congregational fashion. Song and sermon should deal with family values; marriage; rearing kids, career choices. 11:30 Evangelistic – We will keep this at 90 minutes, but if the spirit says so, there is no time restraint. This will be a soul winning/soul seeking service. Good live singing and moving preaching. Power packed from beginning to end.”
Several ministries have been developed under the wonderful leadership of Pastor Flippin. These ministries hae added much to the spiritual atmosphere of the church. God has given Pastor Flippin the vision for this church. realizing that he cannot fulfill the vision alone, the following support staff hs been put in place to help carry out the vision: A Ministerial staff, a Clerical staff, Administrative and other support staff.
The church continues to grow as God adds daily, such as should be saved . Because of the faithfulness of God and the commitment of our members, on Sunay January 19, 2003, we placed another landmark in the life of our church. The burning of a mrtgage in excess of $1,000,000.00 on the William E. Flippin, Sr. Family Life Center became a reality in halp the time anticipated.

OUR HISTORY
About God
God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three personalities: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God.
Genesis 1:1, 26-27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; I Peter 1:2; II Corinthians 13:14
About Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ was born of a virgin. He is the Son of God and is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven's glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.
Matthew 1:22,23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5, 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14,15; I Corinthians 15:3,4; Romans 1:3,4; Acts 1:9-11; I Timothy 6:14,15; Titus 2:13
About the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer a spiritual gift when they are saved. As Christians we seek to live under His control daily.
II Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13, 14:16,17; Acts 1:8; I Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Ephesians 1:13, 5:18; Galatians 5:25
About the Bible
The Bible is God's Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error.
II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:20,21; II Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105, 160, 12:6; Proverbs 30:5
About Human Beings
People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God's creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us were born with a sin nature and are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called "sin". This attitude separates people from God and causes many problems in life.
Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6, 59:1,2; Romans 3:23
About Salvation
Salvation is God's free gift to us but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin's penalty. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.
Romans 5:1, 6:23; Ephesians 2:8,9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5
About Eternity
People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.
John 3:16, 14:17; Romans 6:23, 8:17-18; I Corinthians 2:7-9; Revelation 20:15

Boys and girls learn important teachings from God's Word through fun, hands-on activities, songs and crafts. In midweek and Sunday Bible Study, caring teachers help children develop a love for God and a desire to learn about Him. From a caring and safe nursery ministry to begin a life of nurturing of your children in Christ even from birth to age 4, an exciting children’s ministry for those with developing minds and plenty of energy.
Our ministry is founded on the following scriptures:
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
“And ye fathers provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4 (KJV)
And thou shall teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” Deuteronomy 6:7 (KJV)

PARENTS
Parents are IMPORTANT to the success of The MARKE
We need the parents to help get the youth here for services, fellowships, outings, ect... There are many places that your teen could be, but we promise there is no better place than here with us.
The MARKE has a great group of volunteers - all of whom donate their time and expertise to ensure that your teen is in a safe and friendly environment and to draw them closer to God. We need your help in getting teens here on time and also to be here to pick them up. Of course, you don't have to leave - parents are welcome to stay, mingle and even enjoy the message! Without the youth, The MARKE is not possible and without parents we can't get youth in the door!
Parents are also invited to volunteer with The MARKE.
